- Indian team will play 3-match test series on tour
- Rohit Sharma will be the new vice-captain of the Test team
- Now Virat Kohli will be the only captain of the Test team
Rohit Sharma has been named the captain of India’s ODI team for the tour of South Africa. He will also replace Ajinkya Rahane as the vice-captain of the Test team in the Test series starting from December 26.
Rahane was likely to be stripped of the vice-captaincy after the England tour and the picture was clear when he was dropped for fitness reasons in the recent Mumbai Test against New Zealand. Rohit’s appointment as the vice-captain in the Test team means that he could be the captain in all formats in the near future.
Test team announced for South Africa tour, Rohit Sharma will be the new captain of Team India in ODIs
Rahane has also not been successful as a batsman in the last two years and his achievement was his century in India’s victory against Australia in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. After that series, his form continued to decline and he averaged less than 20 in 12 Tests this year.
One of the reasons for him to remain in the team could also be that the new coach Rahul Dravid would like to give him one last chance which will be the tour of South Africa.
A BCCI official said, “One of the reasons for Rahane to remain in the team could also be that Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara have also not been able to score runs for a long time. In such a situation, it would have been wrong to exclude one and keep the other two in the team. Kohli is a different category but this will be the last chance for Rahane and Pujara.

Hanuma Vihari has made a comeback in the team while fast bowler Ishant Sharma and batsman Cheteshwar Pujara are in the team despite the poor form. The standby includes left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar from Uttar Pradesh, who is currently in South Africa with the India A team.
