Pollard, 35, from West Indies wanted to play for a few more years in the IPL but decided to retire from the IPL after discussions with the five-time champions.
Pollard has 3412 runs in 189 matches in IPL. He made his debut for this team in 2010. However, he will remain with the franchise and will be the team’s new batting coach.
In a statement issued to the franchise, Pollard said, “It was not an easy decision for me as I wanted to play for a few more years, but after discussions with Mumbai Indians, I decided to end my IPL career.”
He said, “This incredible franchise has achieved so much and I think that now some changes are needed. If I don’t play for Mumbai team now, I can’t see myself playing against this team. Once you become a part of Mumbai Indians, you always stick with it.
Pollard, however, will play for the Mumbai-owned franchise in the ‘International League T20’ to be held in the UAE.
He said, “It is not an emotional goodbye to Mumbai Indians, although I am ready to play with Mumbai Indians Emirates in the IPL along with taking on the role of batting coach.”
“This next chapter in my career is really exciting and allows me to move from player to coaching role. I feel extremely proud and honored to have represented the biggest and most successful team in IPL for the last 13 seasons.
Apart from five Indian Premier League titles, Pollard also helped Mumbai Indians win the Champions League in 2011 and 2013. He will replace Robin Singh with the bat in the team.
Pollard said, “I must thank the coaches, managers and other support staff we had at Mumbai Indians. Now I have also joined it (support staff).
“We could not have achieved this success without their (support staff) continuous hard work, dedication and commitment over the years. In particular, I would like to thank my close friend Robin Singh for his good advice and guidance.
Pollard took the occasion to thank the Ambani family for their love, respect and support.
