Tokyo. Indian women’s boxer Lovlina Borgohain settled for a bronze after losing 0-5 to Turkey’s Busenaz Surmenelli in the 69kg category, also known as the welterweight category, at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday. Is kept. All the judges took a unanimous decision and with this, the dream of Assam boxer Lovlina of going to the final was shattered and she had to be content with the bronze medal. With Lovlina winning the bronze, India secured its third medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

Before Lovlina, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu took silver and badminton player PV Sindhu won India a bronze medal in the women’s singles category at the Tokyo Olympics.

With this, India has done better than its performance in the 2016 Rio Olympics where it won a silver and a bronze medal.

Surmenelli impressed all the five judges in the first and second rounds to collect 10 points each while Lovlina got nine points each in the first two rounds from the five judges. Suramenelli looked to beat Lovlina in the third round as well and she took 10-10 points from all the judges in the third round as well. In the third round, two judges gave nine points each and three judges gave eight points each.

Lovlina, who has won medals at the World Championships and Asian Championships, is the second woman and third boxer to ensure India a medal in Olympic boxing. Earlier MC Mary Kom (2012 London Olympics) and Vijender Singh (2008 Beijing Olympics) have won bronze medals for India.

Lovlina’s journey at the Tokyo Olympics was memorable as she defeated Germany’s Edin Appet 3-2 in a last-16 round match to reach the quarterfinals. Lovlina then faced Nan Chin Chen of Taiwan, where she won 4-1.

With a win in the quarterfinals, Lovlina had ensured a medal for the country. Although the country had hoped for a gold medal from him, that dream was shattered with the loss in the semi-finals.

With the loss of Lovlina, India’s journey in the boxing event at the Tokyo Olympics has come to an end. (IANS)
