Cricket will also be played in Los Angeles Olympics 2028. The final decision on this was taken in a meeting held in Mumbai on Monday under the leadership of International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach. Cricket was previously played in the 1900 Paris Olympics. This means that cricket will return to the Olympics after 128 years.
The decision to include five sports including cricket was approved in the meeting of IOC Executive Board officials. Apart from cricket, these include baseball/softball, flag football, squash and lacrosse.
On October 13 this month, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) accepted the proposal to include cricket in the Los Angeles Olympics 2028.
Cricket was in the 1900 Olympics
Before this, cricket has also been played in Paris Olympics (year 1900). Then Great Britain and France played only one test match for the gold medal, in which the Great Britain team won by 158 runs.
Cricket has also been included in the Commonwealth Games twice, in 1998 and 2022. Cricket got a place in the Asian Games thrice in 2010, 2014 and 2023.
Entry for flag football also
Flag football has also been given entry for Los Angeles Olympics 2028. In flag football, both the teams have five players each and it is called the American variant of football. To defend in American football, the attacking player has to be tackled before reaching the touch line with the ball, but in flag football, two belts around the player’s waist have to be removed. Squash has been included in the Olympics for the first time. Squash has been included in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games continuously since 1998.
