Mumbai (EMS). India’s Neeraj Chopra has become the world’s top player in men’s javelin throw. Neeraj has come at number one in the latest rankings released by World Athletics. Olympic gold medalist Neeraj has got 1455 points and is 22 points ahead of Andersen Peters of Grena. Chopra was ranked second since August 30, 2022, but this week he overtook world champion Peters. Jakob Vadlejch of Czech Republic is third with 1410 points, Julian Weber of Germany is fourth with 1385 points and Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan is fifth with 1306 points.
The No.1 ranking will boost Neeraj’s morale for the upcoming matches. He will next compete in the FBK Games 2023 to be held in the Netherlands on June 4. Apart from this, he will also play in the Paavo Nurmi Games 2023 in Turku, Finland on 13 June. This Indian player has got the top position in the rankings on the basis of excellent performances since September. Neeraj had won the Diamond League 2022 Final in Zurich. He has become the first Indian athlete to win the prestigious Diamond League trophy.
He had been sidelined with an injury since the win in Zurich. Returning from injury, he made his comeback at the season-opening Doha Diamond League on May 5 this year and finished first with a throw of 88.67m. Andersen Peters finished third in the Doha meet with a throw of 85.88m. With Chopra rising to the top, he is back in scintillating form ahead of next year’s Paris Olympics. World number 15 Rohit Yadav and world number 17 DP Manu are the other Indian javelin throwers in the top 20.
