Mirabai Chanu to lead Indian contingent in Asian Weightlifting Championship 2023

New Delhi, (Hindustan Times). Tokyo Olympics 2020 medalist Mirabai Chanu will lead a six-member Indian team at the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023 in Jinju, South Korea from May 3 to 13.

This will be the second qualifying event for the Indian weightlifters for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Based on their combined results (snatch clean and jerk), lifters participating in these qualifying events will be able to increase their Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR).

After the qualification process for the Paris Olympics ends on April 28, 2024, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) will release the list of qualified athletes.

Mirabai Chanu had finished second in the women’s 49kg category in her most recent competition at the World Weightlifting Championships 2022 in Colombia in December. For treatment of her shoulder and back ailments, Chanu attended a five-month rehabilitation plan at NIS Patiala. She will continue to compete in the 49kg category.

Mirabai Chanu has won a Commonwealth Games gold, a World Championships and an Olympic silver, but her best continental finish so far has been a bronze at the 2020 Asian Championships in Tashkent.

For the Asian Championships, injured athletes Jeremy Lalrinnunga (Men’s 67kg) and Achinta Sheuli (Men’s 73kg) will also compete again. Since injuring his lower back and thigh muscles during his gold-winning performance at the Commonwealth Games 2022, Lalrinnunga has not participated in any competitive event.

Before her competition began at the Global Weightlifting Championships in December, Schuyley experienced a hamstring pull. He is also the Commonwealth Games champion in the 73kg category.

Bindyarani Devi, who won a silver medal in the women’s 55kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, will continue to compete in this category.

The last Asian Weightlifting Championships was held in Manama, Bahrain last year. At the same time, Harshada Garuda won a bronze medal in the women’s 45 kg category. India got only one medal overall.

The Indian team for the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023 is as follows-

Women: Mirabai Chanu (49kg), Bindyarani Devi (55kg)

Men: Shubham Todkar (61kg), Jeremy Lalrinnunga (67kg), Achinta Sheuli (73kg), Narayan Ajith (73kg).
