Birmingham: Indian women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand stormed into the quarterfinals of the All England Badminton Championships with a thumping win but Lakshya Sen crashed out in men’s singles. Commonwealth Games bronze medalists Treesa and Gayatri continued their fine run to beat the pair of Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota 21-14 24-22 in a thrilling contest. The Indian pair, who had reached the semi-finals last time around, will take on the Chinese pair of Li Wen Mei and Liu Xuan Xuan in the next round.
Sen, who had made it to the final last time, looked out of touch at any point against Anders Antonsen of Denmark and went down 13-21, 15-21 in 52 minutes. The Indian men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also bowed out after losing 21-10, 17-21, 19-21 to World No. 10 Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang of China.
Men’s doubles sixth seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were also unlucky as they went down 21-10, 17-21, 19-21 in 58 minutes to Chinese World No. 10 Liang Wei Kang and Wang Chang in the last 16.
