Colombo: Virat Kohli has become the batsman to complete 13,000 runs in the shortest innings in One Day International cricket. He broke the 19 year old record of his idol player Sachin Tendulkar. He has become the fifth batsman in the world and second batsman from India to complete 13,000 runs in ODIs.

Tendulkar became the first batsman in the world to reach this milestone on 16 March 2004 against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. He achieved this feat in the 321st innings of 330 matches, whereas Kohli reached this milestone in the 267th innings of the 278th match. Kohli also holds the record of scoring 8000 runs, 9000 runs, 10000 runs, 11000 runs and 12000 runs in the fewest innings.

This star batsman achieved this special feat during the Asia Cup match against Pakistan. Before this match, he needed 98 runs to complete 13000 runs and he was successful in scoring the 47th century of his career.

Kohli, playing the 278th match of his career, extended his innings by 8 runs on Monday and scored unbeaten 122 runs. During this time, he made an unbroken partnership of 233 runs for the third wicket with KL Rahul (111 not out), who had returned from injury, due to which India was successful in scoring 356 runs for two wickets.

Before Kohli, Tendulkar had completed 13,000 runs in ODIs for India. Tendulkar tops the list of batsmen who have scored the most runs in this format with 18,426 runs.

Apart from Tendulkar and Kohli, Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara (14,234) and Sanath Jayasuriya (13,430) and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting (13,704) have scored more than 13,000 runs in ODIs.
Kohli, who made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in Dambulla on August 18, 2008, has so far scored 13,024 runs in 267 innings of 278 matches in this format at an average of 57.26, which includes 47 centuries and 65 half-centuries.

Out of his 13,000 runs, Kohli has scored 5,447 runs on home soil, 5,333 runs on the opposing team’s grounds and 2244 runs on neutral venues. He has scored 1,349 runs in England and 1,327 runs in Australia. During this innings, he also made a record of scoring more than 1,000 runs in ODIs in Sri Lanka.
