Chennai. Here the M.A. Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 44-ball 60 helped Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 Qualifier 1 match at the Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday. Entered the final after defeating by 15 runs. Opener Devon Conway struggled for rhythm but his teammate Gaikwad, as usual, hit his fourth half-century of the season. In the end, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali made cameos and CSK managed to reach 172/7 in their 20 overs.
In reply, G.Titans could not build any significant partnership as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Rashid Khan’s 30-run cameo gave GT a glimmer of hope but CSK bowlers were at their best as they bundled out Titans for 157 in 20 overs to book a ticket to the final.
Chasing 173, the Titans got off to a bad start and lost two wickets in the power-play. Deepak Chahar made the first blast by dismissing Wriddhiman Saha. Then Mahesh Thikshana struck in the sixth over and got the big wicket of skipper Hardik Pandya. Some lovely shots from Shubman Gill took GT to 41 for two at the end of the power-play.
The spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Tikshana kept things tight in the next three overs before Shanaka hit back-to-back boundaries to take GT to 72/2 in the 10th over.
In the next over, Jadeja removed Dasun Shanaka, who was looking to reverse sweep over the point fielder, but did not get through the middle of the bat. Tikshana moved to his right at short third man and took a fine catch.
Jadeja struck again in the 13th over after Mathisha Pathirana’s 10-ball over and clean bowled David Miller to end his spell with 2-18. In the next over, Deepak Chahar dismissed Big Fish Gill for 42, making the chase difficult as Titans restricted GT to 88/5. At that time the run rate was more than 12 runs per over.
Tikshana bowled the carrom ball and Rahul Tewatia was caught flat-footed inside the crease and unable to clear it away. The ball hit the stumps after hitting the bat and Gujarat lost their sixth wicket with 71 runs needed from the next 30 balls.
Then Rashid Khan and Vijay Shankar hit some big hits and took 19 runs in the 17th over to change the momentum. But the momentum again swung in CSK’s favor with two consecutive wickets. Shankar was dismissed by Pathirana on the third ball of the 18th over, then a direct hit by Subhranshu Senapati sent Darshan Nalkande back to the pavilion.
With 35 needed from 12 balls, Rashid Khan hit the first ball of the final over for a four, but a moment later Tushar Deshpande dismissed Rashid, GT’s only hope.
When 27 were needed off 6, Pathirana hit a boundary and took a Shami wicket. In this way, CSK defeated GT by 15 runs by dismissing GT for 157 runs.
The Chennai crowd roared loudly when MS Dhoni came out to bat. On the fourth ball of the last over, Ravindra Jadeja bounced it over the cover and hit it for a four. There was a deafening silence inside the ground in the next delivery, as Dhoni soon walked back.
Jadeja got a boundary in the final before falling to the final ball of the innings. In this way Chennai scored 172/7 in 20 overs.
