Aakash Chopra has expressed his disappointment over Ravichandran Ashwin’s performance in the Test series that ended with South Africa. Ashwin could not get a wicket in the third match of the series. The former Indian opener looked quite disappointed by this.
In the three-Test series played in South Africa, Ashwin bowled 64.1 overs. He took only three wickets during this period. Two of these were taken in the Boxing Day Test match.
On his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra said that Ashwin’s failure to take the wicket was also one of the reasons for India’s loss in the series.
Chopra said, “There were a lot of expectations from Ravichandran Ashwin. Not taking Ashwin’s wicket in my opinion, especially in the fourth innings… I think it hurt the Indian team a lot.
The cricketer-turned-commentator said that Ashwin’s performance lacked consistency. He came to bat at number seven but did not do well with the bat as well.
He said, ‘Jadeja was not there, so Ashwin was sure to play. He had to bat at number seven, so runs were expected from him. He also played a good innings. Scored 46 runs. But did he score runs every time – no, will he score runs every time, no.
Jadeja and Ashwin are in competition so you always have to take wickets. If you have to pick someone on the basis of batting, then Jadeja’s place is made. If you have to choose on the basis of bowling, then both of them have equal performance.

Ashwin scored a total of 89 runs in six innings. His highest in the three-match series was 46, which he scored in the first innings of Wanderers.
Chopra also expressed his opinion on the competition between Ashwin and Jadeja. He said that if Ashwin does not take wickets on foreign grounds, then only Jadeja will get a place in the team.
“Since there is a competition between Jadeja and Ashwin, you always have to take wickets. If you have to pick someone on the basis of batting, then Jadeja’s place is made. If you have to choose on the basis of bowling, then both of them have equal performance.
Chopra admitted that the foreign pitches were not suitable for Ashwin but admitted that he could not leave any impact despite this.
He said, ‘I am a little disappointed. I had high hopes. I thought he would do something, he would contribute a little more. Be it the Johannesburg pitch or the Cape Town wicket. Of course, the pitches there won’t turn too much but his contribution with the ball was nothing.
