Dubai: Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has revealed how the ‘minor technical changes’ he made while playing for Delhi Capitals have helped Axar Patel become an effective batsman for India. Ponting expects Akshar to continue his good form in the upcoming IPL as well. In the Border-Gavaskar Test series against Australia, Akshar scored 264 runs in four matches with the help of three half-centuries and was the second highest run-scorer for India after Virat Kohli (297 runs).
Ponting said in ‘ICC Review’, ‘I have known Akshar for a long time and when I first joined the Mumbai team, he was a young player in the team.’ “I knew he had the batting skills but except in the last two years he was not able to show that skill in the IPL or at the international level,” he added. Ponting said, ‘We made some changes in his batting. We made minor adjustments to the position of his hips and shoulders, which helped him play right-arm fast bowlers and short pitched deliveries. Earlier, short pitch balls used to be his weakness.
Akshar made his IPL debut in 2013 for Mumbai Indians. After this, he improved his game by playing for Kings XI Punjab for five years. He has been playing for Delhi Capitals for the last four seasons. Ponting is the coach of Delhi Capitals.
