New Delhi (HS). The door of the ODI World Cup is not closed yet for young and talented batsman Harry Brook. There is another chance for Harry Brook to play in the World Cup after joining the second-tier English team for the four-match ODI series against New Zealand and Ireland later this month. Brook was recently left out of the provisional squad for the World Cup.
Head coach Matthew Mott had repeatedly stressed on Tuesday that the list of 15 names submitted to the ICC was only “tentative”, and that he would have a chance to add three more players to the World Cup squad in the next three weeks .
This means there will be a lot of competition for batting places in the New Zealand series team, with Jason Roy, Dawid Malan and Liam Livingstone being the three players who pose the biggest challenge to Brook. Roy and Malan have both scored two ODI centuries this year while Livingstone provides a spin-bowling option, but all three have had poor performances in recent weeks.
Brook has been officially named in the squad as “batting cover” for the New Zealand series and will link up with England in Cardiff today ahead of the first ODI on Friday.
Brook has also been named in the 13-man squad for the Ireland ODI matches on 20, 23 and 26 September. Jack Crawley will captain England in that series and many of the first-choice players will be rested. This is Crawley’s first try with the leadership in any format, with Ben Duckett named as his deputy.
The squad includes uncapped players such as Warwickshire batsman Sam Hahn and Surrey wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, who have impressed in the county season. Derbyshire fast bowler George Scrimshaw has also been included in the squad.
England squad for Ireland series: Rehan Ahmed, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley (c), Ben Duckett (vc), Sam Hahn, Will Jacks, Craig Overton, Matthew Potts, Phil Salt, George Scrimshaw , Jamie Smith, Luke Wood.
Series schedule: 20 September – 1st ODI, Headingley; 23 September – 2nd ODI, Trent Bridge; 26 September – 3rd ODI, Bristol.
