Stokes recently played a key role in the team’s victory in the World Cup Finals.
He scored an unbeaten 53 in the T20 World Cup final against Pakistan. He was unbeaten on 92 in the ODI World Cup final against New Zealand in 2019.
England Test captain Stokes, however, quit ODI cricket this year saying that it was not possible for him to play all three formats.
England’s limited overs coach Matthew Mott expressed hope that Stokes would change his mind.
He said, “When he asked me about saying goodbye to ODI cricket, the first thing I said is that I am with him in every decision. I also said that there is no need to retire. He can play whenever he wants.
“It is their decision,” he said. Next year is the World Cup and we don’t want to take much T20 cricket. But it is for them to decide.
“The more he can play for us, the better,” said Mott. He’s doing a great job as a Test captain but he’s a vital part of our strategy in limited overs cricket. He is an expert in all three disciplines. He is the kind of player who can win matches on his own.
