Vikas, son of railway employee Brijlal Thakur, was very mischievous in his childhood and after homework, he was put in games to keep him busy. He said, ‘I used to do my homework early and lest I get into bad company, so my parents put me in sports. After trying my hand at athletics, boxing, I chose weightlifting.
After winning the medal, Thakur said, “I am extremely happy to have won my third Commonwealth Games medal. Today is also the birthday of my mother (Asha Devi Thakur). I want to dedicate this medal to him. There was a huge 35kg gap between Samoa’s Don and Thakur but the 28-year-old India lifter said he would improve and match his level in the near future.
“Last time in 2018 I had to change my weight category and in the 85kg category, Rahul (Venkata Regala) beat him (Opeloge). I had an injury and had to come in the 94kg category and I won bronze (in Gold Coast). “It is good for us that the standard of Commonwealth Games is improving. We are dominating the game. But we still need to work hard to achieve the world standard.
