- For the next 3 years after leaving Dhoni’s captaincy, Kohli used to speak
- Indian team could not win ICC tournament under Virat’s captaincy
- Recently, the captaincy of the ODI team was also snatched from Virat Kohli.
Virat Kohli’s hold on Indian cricket loosened in 2021 when Team India’s streak of not winning the title in ICC tournaments continued. However, it definitely got the credit for winning the historic Test series in Australia.
When Mahendra Singh Dhoni (MS Dhoni) left the limited overs captaincy in 2017, Virat Kohli became the uncrowned king of Indian cricket. For the next three years, he did not face any challenge and his words continued to speak.
In the absence of strong administration in the BCCI, it was Kohli who started taking decisions and seeing the good performance of the Indian team, no one objected even though he failed to win the ICC title.
Then Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah took over the reins of the world’s most powerful cricket board in 2019. Everything went well for a year but after the 2020 World Cup, Kohli decided to step down from the captaincy of the T20 team. He had no intention of relinquishing the captaincy of the ODI team but it was almost decided after India’s early departure from the tournament.
Differences exposed between Kohli and Ganguly
Kohli was stripped of the captaincy of the ODI team, after which Ganguly and his differences came to the fore. Both publicly denied each other’s statements.
The limited overs captaincy has now been handed over to Rohit Sharma. Kohli, who has scored 70 international hundreds in his illustrious career, has nothing to prove to anyone but after two years of his average form as a batsman and differences with the BCCI, he would now like to show why he is considered the best batsman in the world.
The end of the Kohli-Shastri era
Kohli and Ravi Shastri’s era also ended with India’s early exit from the T20 World Cup. No one doubted the potential of the Kohli-led Test side but the defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the World Test Championship final left them disappointed.
India made a splendid performance to make it to the final but New Zealand proved it nineteen in the title match. India won the second consecutive series in Australia this year. The win was also significant as the Indian team, which is battling with player injuries, did not even have key players to field in the decider in Brisbane.
After being reduced to 36 runs in the Adelaide Test, the way the Indian team came back to win the series, this victory became one of the legends of cricket. Australia lost a Test in Brisbane after 33 years.
Kohli had returned home after the first Test due to the birth of his child. In his absence, Ajinkya Rahane led from the front and was the architect of India’s victory.
…then Kohli will become the first Asian captain to achieve this feat.
Kohli and the team were close to winning another series abroad but the fifth and last Test in England had to be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. India lead the series 2-1 and the last Test will be played next year. If India wins the series, Kohli will become the first Asian captain to win Test series in England, South Africa and Australia.
Rohit and new coach Rahul Dravid will have to work hard to do well in the T20 World Cup and the ODI World Cup which are scheduled to be held in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
Like last year, this year too the international calendar was disturbed due to Corona.
Like last year, this year also the international calendar was disturbed due to the Corona epidemic. The ODI series between Pakistan and West Indies had to be postponed. Ahead of the T20 World Cup, New Zealand and England pulled out of the Pakistan tour due to security reasons. Pakistan reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup where it was defeated by Australia. Australia won the T20 World Cup for the first time. At the end of the year, within just 12 days, Australia took a winning 3-0 lead in the five-match Ashes series against England.
