Hobart. Australia’s domestic cricket team, Cricket Tasmania (CT), is upset over the treatment meted out to Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine, who recently voluntarily relinquished Test captaincy following an off-field scandal. He had sent text messages to a former CT employee in 2017. Cricket Tasmania president Andrew Gagin issued a statement on Tuesday, saying the former Test captain should never have been put in a position to have resigned as captain ahead of the Ashes starting in Brisbane on 8 December. .
“From the conversations I’ve had in recent days, it’s clear that the anger in the Tasmanian cricket community and the general public is clear,” Gagin said on Tuesday.
Tim Paine has been a beacon for Australian cricket over the past four years and has been instrumental in saving the national team’s reputation after the Cape Town disaster.
The ball-tampering scandal—also known as the sandpaper-gatescandal—saved the reputation of the Australian cricket team in the 2018 Cape Town Test when Penn was made Test captain. Three Australian players – then captain Steve Smith, his deputy David Warner and Cameron Bancroft – were banned in the wake of the scandal.
Gagin said, however, that at a time when CA should have backed Tim, he was considered clearly unacceptable. Cricket Australia’s treatment of the Australian Test captain is appalling and the worst since Bill Lawrie 50 years ago.
The Cricket Tasmania Board confirmed its view that Paine should not have been placed in a position where he felt the need to resign over an incident. It was determined by an independent investigation at the time that it was not a breach of the Code of Conduct and a consensual and private exchange that took place between two mature adults and was not repeated.
Paine, currently playing in Tasmania’s Second XI, was dismissed for one on Tuesday after taking six catches behind the stumps on the opening day of the competition against South Australia at the Lindisfarne Oval in Hobart. (IANS)
