Striker Dilpreet Singh’s hat-trick helped defending champions and Olympic bronze medalist India beat hosts Bangladesh 9-0 to register their first win in the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament on Wednesday.
Dilpreet (12th, 22nd and 45th) scored three field goals for India while Jarmanpreet Singh (33rd, 43rd) scored two goals from penalty corners. Meanwhile, Lalit Upadhyay (28th) converted vice-captain Harmanpreet Singh’s flick from a penalty corner.
Akashdeep Singh (54th) scored the field goal while Mandeep Mor scored his first goal for the country in the 55th minute. It was not enough that Harmanpreet also got her name inscribed in the scoresheet, converting India’s 13th penalty corner in the 57th minute.
India, led by Manpreet Singh, playing their first tournament after a historic campaign at the Tokyo Olympics with some new players, played out a 2-2 draw with Korea in the opening match of the tournament on Tuesday.
Earlier, Team India played a 2-2 draw against Korea in their first match on Tuesday. In this match, India were ahead of a double lead till half-time, despite being forced to play a draw by Korea.
The Indian team will now take on arch-rivals Pakistan in the round robin stage on Friday. The match between India and Pakistan is expected to be exciting. Wherever the competition between the two countries is on the field of play, the passion of the spectators is made on sight.
