Lausanne. Argentina women stunned China 2-1 in a thrilling FIH Hockey Pro League encounter in Eindhoven while the Australian men produced a sensational performance to thrash Netherlands 7-2 in a clash between the two hockey giants.
(Women) Argentina v China 2-1
China dominated the first half with more possession and more territory than their rivals, but neither keeper was put under much pressure as both teams were able to break into the circle a few times.
Argentina found another gear early in the third quarter, looking better on the ball and more cohesive as a team. Their efforts paid off when Victoria Souz struck the ball from 25 yards out which deflected off Delphina Thome’s hockey goal into the net. Argentina got a 1-0 lead.
China came back into the game with positive play in the last few minutes of the third quarter but could not score any goals.
China finally scored an equalizer in the fourth quarter. Zhang Xiaoxue made his way into the circle and took a shot which was saved by the keeper but the ball rebounded back to him. This time he scored the equalizing goal.
But with just over a minute left in the match, Argentina were awarded a penalty corner which Valentina Raposo drilled the ball into the bottom left corner to seal a 2–1 victory.
Maria Granatto was named player of the match and she said, “I’m really happy to win today. I think China is a really tough opponent but we worked really hard and we had a chance to score in the last minute.” Found what was really important to us.”
(Men) Australia v Netherlands 7-2
In the men’s competition, Australia thrashed Netherlands 7-2 in a one-sided fashion. Australia struck first when Eddie Ockenden delivered a superb through ball and Tom Craig scored his 38th international goal.
What followed was some fine interplay which saw Daniel Beale slip the ball back for Lachlan Sharpe to double Australia’s lead with just seconds left in the first quarter.
A quick free hit from just outside the circle led to the third goal early in the second quarter. This time it was Nathan Ephraims who defeated the Keeper.
Craig then scored his second goal of the night less than a minute later after the ball had entered the circle and was passed by James Collins.
Australia’s fifth goal was their first from a penalty corner. Jeremy Hayward added to the home team’s woes when he scored with a drag flick.
Holland finally got themselves on the scoresheet a minute before half-time.
It took less than five minutes for the Australians to resume their goal-scoring blitz in the third quarter, with Blake Govers scoring on the rebound from a penalty corner following an early save from Dutch keeper Pirmin Blaak.
He scored his seventh in the fourth quarter when Beale ran it back from the baseline for Ephrams to slot in and complete his double.
Bukkens scored a goal for the Dutch from a penalty corner to reduce the deficit but it narrowed the margin to an emphatic 7–2 victory for the Australians.
Tom Craig was named man of the match and said, “I think the biggest thing was that we were really skilful in front of goal and we were skilful defending so we’re very pleased I think The energy is really good. I mean it’s hard not to have good energy – we’re in the European summer, the crowd is on the rise, cheering for us, cheering for Holland, cheering for good hockey So it’s a good feeling out there and things are going well.”
