East London (South Africa), January 20 (IANS) | India’s stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana heaped praise on Amanjot Kaur and Deepti Sharma for their 27-run win against South Africa in the first match of the tri-series, saying they both put in a stellar performance.
Mandhana said after the match, “We talked before the match that we need to show our spirit and the team did it. The partnership between Amanjot and Deepti showed that. Then our bowlers did their job on this pitch. The starts we got, thought we would reach 120-130, but we scored about 15 more runs, credit goes to him.
“The batsmen told us the ball was turning, it was a dry pitch and our spinners thought they could bowl well. Whatever they did, it was worth watching,” the skipper said.
Player of the match Amanjot Kaur said, “I am very happy to contribute to the team’s win. Never thought I would play like this, it was a good opportunity and glad I grabbed it. Just wanted to score some runs.” Was expecting. She (Deepti) explained to me, I was debuting and she guided me well. Told me to just take singles and bat till the end. It really helped.”
