After T20, Virat Kohli can lose captaincy in ODIs too!

New Delhi. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is disappointed after India lost two consecutive matches in the ICC T20 World Cup. At the same time, if the Indian team fails to make it to the semi-finals in this tournament, then Virat Kohli can also lose his ODI captaincy.

Kohli has earlier announced that he will step down as captain after this T20 World Cup. However, after India’s poor performance in the UAE, questions have arisen whether he should continue as captain in ODIs or not?

According to sources, there is no response from the BCCI on this as of now.

“The board is unhappy at the moment and now doubts have started about his (Virat) continuing as captain in ODIs too,” the source said. But there are still three matches left in the tournament. In these, if India somehow manages to qualify, the scenario can change.

Regarding giving the responsibility to Rohit Sharma, the official said, it is too early to name anyone, let the T20 World Cup end. Rahul Dravid may also join the team as the head coach soon. This will also be discussed with them.

Whether Rohit or someone else, or whether Virat will continue as captain, will be decided later. There is a possibility that India may get a different captain and Test captain (Virat) for the T20 and ODI formats.

Kohli has so far captained in four ICC tournaments, the 2017 Champions Trophy, the 2019 World Cup, the World Test Championship (WTC) and the current T20 World Cup. In all these major competitions, India failed to win a single title.

Earlier, India had won the 2013 Champions Trophy title held in England and Wales. The captain of the team at that time was Dhoni. After this, no one has won any title in any ICC event.

Will India qualify for T20 World Cup?

While India may no longer reach eight points in the tournament, Afghanistan and New Zealand can get eight, provided there is no major upset in Group 2. The match between Afghanistan and New Zealand to be held on November 7 will be crucial.

India will have to win their next three matches and these teams will have to beat big net run rates. Because at present India’s net run rate is at 1.609. On the other hand, New Zealand will have to lose to either Namibia or Scotland because if this happens then Kohli’s team will get the advantage. (IANS)
