Sona’s OTT documentary ‘Shut Up Sona’ directed and shot by Deepti Gupta released on Friday. Singer said that she was not trying to make autobiography like many Bollywood films. She said that it is about a ‘woman artist’s journey’ and women do not get opportunities to build their brand as much as male artists do. In an interview with The Quint, Sona also shared her struggles while trying to perform at the Music Awards and how she lost out on ‘a lot of work’ due to her outspokenness.
Despite the talent, I was not called…
Sona said, ‘I have lost a lot of work because of my outspokenness. In my film you will see that I am not kind to Ram. He is being called to NH7, where I should have been. In a way, I am more capable than him. I am a bigger live performer than Ram. I have a band I’ve been touring for the past 15 years, but I’ve never been called to NH7. The truth is, I’m probably the grumpy lady NH7 wouldn’t call. I think I have flaws. But when I make a mistake, I am ready to say sorry and give someone a hug. Maybe NH7 should do the same.
In which India are we living – Sona
Sona also tells to call Vishal and tell him that he talks about political issues like Kashmir, but he is silent where all this is happening in his own industry. She said that she was a stakeholder in the company that organized NH7, but still she was not called. He said, ‘Vishal used to tell me ‘you do your women’s festival’. Do we need a woman’s coat to sing on stage? In which India are we living?’
Appreciation of Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Sona also said that she got only five lines to sing in the song ‘Jalima’ from Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Raees’, while singer Arijit Singh sang almost the entire song. She said women are often offered reprized versions of songs as a consolation prize. However, Sona praised filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali for having a “low soundtrack” in his films.
