Kavita Krishnamurthy was born in a Tamil family in New Delhi. His father TS Krishnamurthy worked in the Ministry of Education. Kavita’s childhood name was Sharda and she was in love with music from a young age. Seeing this love and sweet voice of Kavita Krishnamurthy, Aunt Pratima Bhattacharya got her enrolled in Rabindranath Sangeet. He started taking training in Hindustani classical music from classical singer Balram Puri. The magic of Kavita Krishnamurthy’s voice was visible. In the sixties, he participated in many inter-ministerial level classical music competitions and won many medals. At the age of eight, Kavita Krishnamurthy won a gold medal in a music competition.
First song sung with Lata Mangeshkar
When Kavita Krishnamurthy was studying in college, she got an opportunity to sing in a Bengali film. In the year 1971, he sang with Lata Mangeshkar in ‘Shriman Prithviraj’. Although Kavita Krishnamurthy wanted to work in the Indian Foreign Services, but at the age of 14 she came to Mumbai to try her luck in Bollywood. In the year 1976, Kavita Krishnamurthy sang in her first Hindi film ‘Kadambari’. This song was ‘Aayega Aanewala’ which was the Hindi remake of the same song sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Kavita Krishnamurthy left her mark in Bollywood with this song. Many offers of songs started coming to him.
Award won for 3 consecutive years, Padma Shri honor
Kavita Krishnamurthy sang many songs in her career from RD Burman to Amit Kumar, Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu and Abhijeet Bhattacharya. Kavita Krishnamurthy’s duets with Sonu Nigam, Shaan and Babul Supriyo were also well established. Kavita Krishnamurthy was at the height of stardom in the nineties. He was also being asked in the South Film Industry. Apart from Hindi, Kavita Krishnamurthy sang in 45 languages including Kannada, Rajasthan, Bhojpuri, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Konkani, Nepali, Assamese and English. He also got many honors for this. Kavita Krishnamurthy won 4 Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singing consecutively from 1995 to 1997. He was awarded the Padma Shri in the year 2005.
