After the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, the hashtag Boycott Bollywood started trending. However, ahead of the release of several films like Laal Singh Chaddha, Liger, Brahmastra, and Raksha Bandhan in 2022, netizens started boycotting them. Such trends affected the box-office collections of some films. Just before the release of Laal Singh Chaddha, Twitter users started trending the hashtag #BoycottLaalSinghChaddha asking people not to watch the film.
Earlier it was small, now it is known!
Earlier it seemed like a very small thing, just a bunch of trolls creating some frenzy around the film, however, when the film was declared a box office flop, people realized the seriousness. Circulated the statement ‘India’s growing intolerance’ on the micro-blogging site. Some controversial statements from Kareena’s past also surfaced online.
These films flopped due to boycott
Films like Liger and Brahmastra were also called for to be boycotted by many. However, Brahmastra did great business at the box office, emerging as one of the highest-grossing films of 2022. The trend started again ahead of Shahrukh and Deepika Padukone’s ‘Pathan’. The song ‘Besharam Rang’ from the film was released online on 12th December and soon became the talk of the town. While many loved the peppy track, there were those who found ‘Besharam Rang’ objectionable over the use of saffron and green colored costumes. In Indore, a group of activists also protested against Pathan and Shameless Rang and burnt effigies of Deepika and Shahrukh.
