It is known that the hijab controversy started when six girls came to a government college in Udupi wearing scarves out of their faith, which was protested by another section of students. Students wearing saffron scarves protested. Gradually this protest spread to other parts of Karnataka. The matter escalated so much that there was violence in a college and then the police had to lathi-charge.
Following this, the Karnataka government declared a three-day holiday from Wednesday for high schools and pre-university colleges to avoid any disturbance and untoward incidents on the campuses.
