When and why was the SPG formed?
When the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her own security personnel, the central government felt the need to mobilize a dedicated force that could protect the country’s current and former prime ministers and their families, after which on 2 June 1988 This Special Protection Group (SPG) was formed by an Act of Parliament of India in Its headquarter is located in New Delhi. Apart from the present Prime Minister and his family, this security is given to the former Prime Minister and his family for one year. Apart from this, it can also be increased according to the danger.
There is no direct recruitment in SPG
Unlike any other military force in the country, there is no direct recruitment in the SPG. Senior and junior officers are recruited from the Indian Police Service (IPS), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). SPG personnel change in groups every year. No person can serve for more than one year. SPG personnel are sent back to their parent unit after completing their tenure. After which again a vacancy list is sent to these organizations by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The list then forwards the hierarchy to the next lower levels of the units. Many personnel apply through this for various posts in SPG.
The selection process has to go through many tests.
To get into SPG, candidates have to go through various selection process like SSB. They have PI, psych and physical test. The first stage of the selection process consists of a personal interview conducted by an IPS officer of the rank of IG (Inspector General), two deputy IGs and two assistant IGs. After the interview, a physical exam, a written test and a psychological assessment are conducted. In which the successful candidates are given special training.
SPG Commando Training
The candidates coming to SPG have already worked in the Special Forces and they also have experience. However, even after this the selected candidates have to undergo world class training. This is the same training that is given to United States Secret Service agents. In this, the jawans are made fit, attentive and perfect in technology. Being the responsibility of the Prime Minister of the country, each SPG commander is a One Man Army. After that they are kept under observation for three months. Including a weekly exam. Those who fail in probation are given another chance in the next batch and if they still fail to clear it, they are returned to the parent unit. SPG members are regularly moved from one duty to another.
Branch of SPG
SPG is mainly divided into 4 branches.
Operations- It deals with the actual security duties. In the Operations Wing, there are components such as the Communications Wing, the Transport Wing and the Technical Wing.
Training: This category deals with the training of personnel in physical efficiency, firing, anti-sabotage investigation, communication and other operational aspects.
Intelligence and Tourism: It deals with threat assessment, internal intelligence relating to personnel, verification of character and antecedents, tourism and other related jobs.
Administration – This category deals with personnel, procurement and other related matters.
SPG commando job
The main function of the SPG is that wherever the Prime Minister goes, he should take all necessary measures for his safety. Be it a domestic tour or a foreign tour. This includes everything from anti-sabotage checks, cleaning of places and personal security details etc. The number of people meeting the Prime Minister, keeping complete information about the program, answering the phone calls of the Prime Minister, preparing his time table and determining the vehicles for him is the job of the SPG. The SPG protects the PM by making several security circles around him. The task of the members living inside this security circle is to give protection to the Prime Minister in any attack and get him out of there. That is their only mission. Whereas the SPG counter assault team usually covers the second circle. Their work is entrusted with the task of providing covering firepower for the protection of the PM. The third circle also works in this. In which apart from SPG, NSG, IAF are also included. On the other hand, the SPG is mainly accompanied by the local police force in the last circle. Their main function is to mobilize the crowd.
