UGC has provided a huge relief for those young people who were willing to apply for the post of Assistant Professor but were not able to apply due to not completing their PhD. The UGC has temporarily suspended the PhD requirement for applications for the post of Assistant Professor till July 2023.
It is being told that the UGC has taken this decision keeping in view the ongoing Corona epidemic since last year, the last year’s epidemic has affected the education and teaching work a lot. All educational institutions including all schools-colleges and universities were closed due to Corona, during which online classes were organized for children, but research work in higher education remained almost closed. Due to which the students could not complete their PhD, UGC took this step keeping an eye on the same thing.
From July 2021 to 2023, UGC has removed the minimum qualification Ph.D. for the recruitment of Assistant Professors in the University. Any candidate who applies for the post of Assistant Professor in this time interval, it is not mandatory to have a PhD. According to the information given by the UGC, the Covid-19 transition has been attributed to the removal of the PhD requirement for the post of Assistant Professor for the next two years.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had already made an announcement regarding this matter. The Education Minister said that for the recruitment of Assistant Professors in colleges, PhD requirement will not be mandatory. He had made it completely clear that these rules are only for the recruitments to be held in 2021. The PhD requirement has been put on hold only for this time, it does not mean that we have canceled it forever. This relief to the candidates has been taken in view of the interruption caused by the corona epidemic and the recruitment of teachers lying vacant in the university.
