Union Minister of State for Education Annapurna Devi has given this information in reply to a written question in the Lok Sabha.

The literacy rate of rural area is 67.77 percent. Whereas, the literacy rate of the urban area is 84.11 percent. The Education Minister, in response, also said that the Samagra Shiksha Yojana aims to provide universal access and retention in education, reduce gender and social category gaps, and enhance learning levels from pre-school to senior secondary levels.
Center helps states in implementing Samagra Shiksha Yojana
According to the education minister, the central government assists the states and union territories in implementing the Samagra Shiksha Yojana as a program to improve the literacy rate in the states. A centrally sponsored scheme called Saakshar Bharat was implemented in rural areas of 404 districts of 26 states and one union territory to improve the adult literacy rate. These districts were selected according to the female literacy rate of 2001 census.

The Education Minister said that the scheme aims to increase the overall literacy rate of the country to 80% and reduce the gender gap to 10% by the end of the 12th Five Year Plan.
