Before independence, judicial power and executive power were with the same person in the country. But after the constitution came into force, the public service was separated under Article 50. Thus the responsibilities and scope of the Collector and the DM got separated. The DM gets his powers from the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973. Whereas a collector gets the land from the Land Revenue Code, 1959. The work of both the officers is also to coordinate between various departments and agencies of the district. In most states of the country, the powers of the collector have also been vested in the work of the DM, that is why many people believe that the DM and the collector are one and the same. However this is not necessary.

District Collector
The district collector is the biggest officer related to revenue management at the district level. In revenue matters, he is responsible to the government through the Divisional Commissioner and the Financial Commissioner (Revenue). Know what are the main responsibilities of the District Collector-

District Magistrate-
These are often abbreviated as DMs. It is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer who is the senior most executive magistrate and chief in charge of the general administration of a district in India. The responsibilities assigned to a District Magistrate vary from state to state. Their main responsibility is to maintain the administrative order in the district. DM salary
Apart from excellent salary and allowances, a DM also gets many other facilities. According to the 7th pay scale, the salary of a DM ranges from 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh rupees per month. Apart from this, they also get the facility of bungalow, car, security guard, medical, phone etc.
Functions and Salary of Sub Divisional Magistrate-
The Sub Divisional Magistrate is the head magistrate of his division. Under the revenue law within the division, the SDM has got all the powers of the collector. Candidates for the posts of SDM are selected by the states on the basis of prelims, mains and interview exam, so the salary of SDM is also determined by the state governments, due to which the salary of SDM is different in all the states. . Work and Salary of Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar
The head of the Tehsil level is called Tehsildar. The Naib-Tehsildar works within the Tehsildar, but both have the same revenue and magisterial responsibilities and functions. In revenue matters, both exercise the powers of Assistant Collectors, Grade II as circle revenue officers. A Tehsildar gets salary ranging from 15600 to 39100 rupees per month.
