Tata MD has named this testing kit as OmiSure. On Wednesday, the Indian Council of Medical Research approved it. OmiSure is a first-of-its-kind test that uses two S-gene viral targets to identify the oomicron. The first target is based on S-gene dropout i.e. S-gene target failure (SGTF) while the second target is based on S-gene mutation amplification (SGMA). The company says that it has started increasing production capacity, supply chain and raw material inventory to perform 2 lakh Omisure tests daily.

This kit has been prepared by a team led by Dr V Ravi from Bangalore. Presently he is Head of R&D at Tata MD. According to The Indian Express, Ravi said that this is not a home testing kit. It detects viral genetic material and is not a viral antigen. For this, special equipment, trained people and bio-safety are needed. OmiSure is a real time PCR, so it is not meant for home testing.
