New Delhi: Now, while reviewing or branding a product, celebrities or influencers on social media will have to declare whether they have taken money from the company in return. It also has to be told that no facility was provided by the company. They have to give information on their social media platform whether it is paid or not. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs issued new guidelines in this matter on Friday. Under this, while advertising or promoting any product, giving wrong information or deliberately hiding it may result in penalty. Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh has told NBT that the new guidelines have come into effect from Friday.

Singh said that breaking the fixed rules will attract a fine of Rs 10 lakh first. Persistent violation will attract a fine of up to 50 lakhs. The advertiser may be barred from any endorsement for two to six months. That platform can also be blocked. According to the ministry, there are more than one lakh influencers in the country. Meta and Avatar will also come under its ambit. Celebrities who advertise on social media will also be under its purview. By the year 2025, this market will be of 2,800 crores, in such a situation, these guidelines are necessary to protect the interests of the customers.

Editors Guild of India expressed its concern on new media guideline, said this by tweeting

What is special in the guidelines

Influencers and celebrities will endorse only those products that they use themselves.
It must be mentioned that free product has been received for endorsement. Things like gifts or trips etc. are being received from the company.

-It will also have to be told whether there is a family relationship with the company or product.
