Nehru has presented the budget
Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister to present the Union Budget. He held the additional charge of the Finance Ministry in 1958-59. Then TT Krishnachari had to resign. Krishnachari’s name cropped up in the Mundra scam.
Morarji Desai presented record budget
Morarji Desai held the post of Prime Minister from 1977 to 1979 in the Janata government. He holds the record for presenting 10 budgets (8 annual and 2 interim). Desai presented the budget every year from 1959-60 to 1963-64 when he was the finance minister under Nehru and Indira Gandhi. He also presented the interim budget of 1962-63. Then from 1967-68 to 1969-70, Desai presented budgets for three years. He also presented the interim budget for 1967-68.
When Indira Gandhi presented the budget
In 1969, Desai resigned from Indira’s cabinet. After this, the then Prime Minister took additional charge of the Finance Ministry. In this way Indira Gandhi became the first woman finance minister. She was also the first woman to present the budget. He presented the budget in 1970. He kept the portfolio of the Finance Ministry with him for a year. Then he handed over its reins to his Home Minister Yashwantrao Chavan.
Rajiv’s name is also among the prime ministers who presented the budget.
Rajiv Gandhi’s name is also in the list of Prime Ministers who presented the budget. In 1987, between January and July, he had to hold the additional charge of the finance portfolio. However, this also put the responsibility of presenting the budget on him. This made Rajiv the third member of the Nehru-Gandhi family to do so. Rajiv took charge of the Finance Minister because he removed VP Singh from the post.
Manmohan Singh has presented a historic budget
Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was the Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 in the Narasimha Rao government. The budget of 1991 will always be remembered. In this, Manmohan had taken major steps like reduction in import licensing along with a radical change in the import-export policy. Service tax was introduced by Manmohan Singh in 1994. It quickly became a major source of income for the government.
