New Delhi: After the landslide in Joshimath, Uttarakhand, the work of demolishing two hotels has started. Mount View and Malari Inn will be razed to the ground next week under the supervision of Roorkee-based Central Building Research Institute (CBRI). For this, the expert team of CBRI is headed by Chief Scientist Dr. DP Kanungo (Dr. Debi Prasanna Kanungo). Last year Supertech’s Twin Tower in Noida was razed with explosives under the supervision of Kanungo. Cracks have appeared inside Hotel Mount View in Joshimath while Malari Inn has cracks under it. A special technique will be used to break them.
Kanungo is Senior Principal Scientist in the Geotechnical Engineering Division at CBRI. Born on June 16, 1967, Kanungo did his MTech in Applied Geology from the University of Roorkee after completing his BSc in Geology from Utkal University, Odisha. Considering Kanungo’s vast experience, the Uttarakhand government has entrusted him with the responsibility of demolishing hotels in Joshimath. Along with demolishing the hotels, the CBRI team will also assess the damage. Along with this, this team will also design a pre-fabricated hut for temporary rehabilitation. The team is currently surveying the damaged buildings. It may take 7-10 days to demolish them.
