Dubai, Aug 1 (AP) Hashem al-Gayz, the head of Kuwait’s state-run petroleum company, took over as Secretary-General of the Organization of the Oil Exporting Countries (OPEC) on Monday. Al-Gayz was elected as the next Secretary General of OPEC in January itself. He was to assume his office on August 1. He replaces Mohamed Sanusi Barkindo, who died three weeks ago, as general secretary. Barkindo died in his home country of Nigeria, hours after he argued in favor of the oil industry. Al-Gayz was elected as the next Secretary General of OPEC in January itself. He was to assume his office on August 1.

Al-Gayz has vast experience in the oil industry. As head of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, he worked with six Kuwaiti petroleum ministers. So he is a familiar face for OPEC.
In a statement issued by OPEC, al-Gayz’s extensive experience was mentioned. In it, Al-Gayz said he looked forward to working closely with all member states and partners.
