New Parliament Building: The much awaited new Parliament House of India will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 28 May 2023. A historical tradition is being revived on this historic occasion. On Wednesday, May 24, 2023, Home Minister Amit Shah told a press conference in this regard that after the inauguration of the new Parliament House, a sengol would be installed near the chair of the Lok Sabha Speaker. This Sengol was ceremoniously given by the people of Tamil Nadu to the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in August 1947 as a transfer of power. This Sengol has since been kept in the Nehru Gallery of the Prayagraj Museum (Allahabad Museum). It has been brought to Delhi. He said that this new Parliament House is an attempt to connect our history, tradition, civilization and cultural heritage with modernity.

On this occasion, Union Home Minister Amit Shah told a press conference that “Our government believes that it is inappropriate to keep this sacred Sengol in a museum. There can be no other place more appropriate, sacred than the Parliament House for its establishment. He further added that “That is why on the same day when the new Parliament House will be dedicated to the nation, Modi will very humbly receive the Sengol from an Aadhimam of Tamil Nadu and with great respect, place it near the chair of the Lok Sabha Speaker” Home Minister Also launched a website on the occasion, in which information about the importance and background of the scepter was given along with a short documentary.

Sengol’s relationship with the Tamil Chola Empire
Let us tell you that Sengol is derived from the Tamil word ‘Semmai’, which means religion, truth and loyalty. The Sengol scepter was a symbol of the power and authority of the Indian emperor. During the Chola period, Sengol was most important at the time of the coronation of the kings. It served as a spear and flagpole. Rich in exquisite carvings and intricate decorations, they were given as a transfer of power from one ruler to another.
